Self-Propelled or Push? Which Do You Choose?
There are so many different terms associated with garden maintenance, but a good place to start is by determining whether you want a self-propelled or a push mower. Here's some points to take into account:
If you lawn is under about ¼ acre, a push mower is your best bet. The cutting deck for these types ranges between 20 and 22 inches, which is ideal for ensuring your lawn is polished as quickly and efficiently as possible. You can save a lot of money if you're fine with putting in some elbow grease to get the job done!
If your lawn is greater than ¼ acre, and up to about ¾ acre, a self-propelled mower is best for you. These mowers do a lot of the work for you, pushing itself to reduce your fatigue- which you'd get from using a push mower. You only need to control the path that it moves in.
1) Hyundai HYM430SPER Lawn Mower - Self Propelled
This is a mini petrol lawnmower review, and while this is a relatively expensive option to opt for and isn't amongst the most affordable lawnmowers out there, it's a solid choice and will last you a good long time. It's perfectly ideal for people who want to spend a fair bit on their new lawnmower, rather than a quick fix.
Rear Roller: This self propelled petrol lawn mower has rear rollers situated on it, that extend to the right of the cutter deck. This allows you to mow effectively along borders, without fearing the possibility that you may overrun and tip onto the lower border.
Various Cutting Heights: There are six different cutting height options to choose from, which is quite typical for electric lawnmowers. These height options range between the traditional 25mm and 75mm, with a handy height adjustment lever.
Large Grass Box Capacity: The grass box capacity in this self propelled petrol lawn mower has a capacity of 45 litres, and a quick-release mechanism so you spend minimal time fiddling around in attempt to empty the grass box capacity out. An airflow design plastic top of the grass box capacity also ensures you can pick up a maximum amount of grass.
Hyundai Power Engine: The Hyundai HYM430SPER self propelled petrol lawn mower has a whopping 139cc, 3.7HP, OHV, 4-stroke economical petrol engine. This means less fuel consumption from the fuel tank (highly fuel efficient).
Easy Stowaway: The HYM430SPER petrol heavy mower has handy foldable handles for easy stowing away and a much more compact size. It's great for people who have small garages (or no garages), or limited garden space.
Summary and Verdict
This self-propelled petrol lawn mower is a great heavy lawn mower option to go for (not too heavy though). It's usually available online or in-stores at around £500, but it's available on Amazon for about £450.
The only thing we didn't like about this mower is the quality of parts used. While the price is high, we found many plastic parts of this mower that are usually replaced with more expensive, durable, and reliable materials in other options. Nevertheless, the performance of this mower is outstanding for the price paid- we would just appreciate slightly better materials used.
Second on our list is the Cobra RM40SPCE petrol lawnmower with roller. This is a self-propelled lawnmower, and is a slightly more affordable option to go for. If you're looking for quality garden equipment but don't have the funds for a luxury Honda one for example, these cheaper petrol models are a great dupe that will last you a long time. You'll be whizzing away at your garden with ease.
Read on to see why this is amongst the best rear roller lawn mower options out there.
What We Love:
Great Variety: With this immaculate grass maintaining mower, you can handle all kinds of grass- damp grass, rough grass, long grass, and everything in between. There are six height adjustment options to choose from between 17-75mm, which is a much larger variation than other mowers. You also benefit from a 16 inch cutting deck.
Increased Engine Durability: The self-propelled motor allows for a good walking speed of 3.4 kilometres per hour. In addition, you benefit from both a standard recoil pull-start mechanism, as well as an electric key start feature. This removes the need to do any fidgety business with the recoil, and simply opt for an electrical startup mechanism. This can help reduce wear and tear on the engine. The engine is a unique 135cc Cobra DG450 OHV.
Efficient Collection System: The standout feature of this mower was the collection system. We love how organised and easy to navigate it is. Not only do you benefit from a large, 50-litre collection bag, you can benefit from a direct collection system. The fullness indicator is located on the top of the bag too, for efficient and handy feedback. The indicator remains shut when the bag is full and requires emptying.
The only downside with this mower is the speed adjustment! This mower travels relatively fast compared to others, so we don't recommend it if you aren't open to getting a little workout while you're doing it...as if mowing isn't a workout enough!
Next we have the Webb Supreme WERR17SP Lawnmower. Webb has a built, aged reputation for superior quality products that are also easy to use and maintain. They're well-known and trusted in the United Kingdom, and their service team are great too if you have any aftercare concerns. While it's on the pricier end of the spectrum, it does offer you quality and reliability that may not be found in other brands.
Resilient for All Lawns: You can create beautiful stripes on your lawn no matter how stubborn the grass is; the super-strong ABS deck has tough, resistant metal blades that can cut through any kind of material. The stripes are 43 centimetres wide.
Reliable and Quiet: The smooth lawn mower engine is very reliable, like the Honda model we'll talk about later. The 500E Series engine is expertly created by the famous US manufacturer Briggs & Stratton. It's dependable, gives fewer emissions, reduces overall fuel and maintenance costs, as well as vibrating less and producing less noise.
Tri-Method Disposal System: There are six different cutting height adjustments to choose from and three different methods of disposing of those cuttings too! Usually we get a rear discharge or collection bag. The cutting range varies between 23 and 73mm, and cuttings can be disposed of in the following ways; finely mulched, collected, or ejected onto the grass.
Large Collection Bag: The high-quality, durable collection bag has a 60 litre capacity. This means you won't have to empty it as often, which is awesome for time-efficiency. The mesh material provides enhanced airflow, so you have less trips to the local compost heap or outdoor large bin- more time spent actually mowing.
Quicker Cutting: One other notable feature about this lawn mower was that the blades were wider and seemed to cut the same area in a much quicker time. This makes it a great option for people in a hurry.
This mower is a great option to go for if you have a good amount to spend on a reliable, long-lasting machine. It's usually available online or in-stores at around £500, but it's available on Amazon for about £450.
When looked at comparatively, we found that this mower is less excellent at trimming edges cleanly, in comparison to the Honda, for example. We found that you do need to go over edges a couple of times to achieve a uniform appearance, but it doesn't reduce time-efficiency too much.
4) Lawnmaster Cordless Lawn Mower with Rear Roller
Next on this list we've got the Lawnmaster cordless lawn mower. This one is slightly cheaper, but it's still a very high-quality alternative to petrol lawn mowers. With smooth rear wheels to create a beautiful striped finish.
Quick, Convenient Usage: When using this lawn mower over others, you'll find yourself completing the task in a much quicker time frame. This is due to the fuss-free, cordless mechanism and fast charging. The quick-release levers also make it easier to fold up the handles to ensure that the lawn mower can be stowed away neatly in your shed/garage.
Multiple Functionality: This bulky mower features a solid 60 litre grass box capacity/60-litre grass bag to store as much waste as possible. With this conventional lawnmower, you can collect grass clippings for disposal, finely mulch the grass and return those earthy nutrients back to the soil, or eject grass from the deck at the side or rear. Whether you're looking at medium gardens or large, (most of the mowers we talk about are great for medium gardens), this one will do the job great. You get a grass collector with a grass box size of 60 litres, as well as a mulching plug and side discharging chute options.
Power Feedback: Innovative quality lawnmowers like this have a host of bespoke features to help you get the job done most efficiently. The iPower feature of these durable lawnmowers by Lawnmaster allows you to select the correct power value depending on mowing conditions that you're in (rainy, dry, muddy?). You can also set the runtime (maximum); tougher conditions require higher power, and super-stubborn/long grass needs maximum power. You can check battery status too just by one button touch.
Height Adjustment Functionality: There are various height options (cutting height adjustment), with height adjustment ranging between 25 and 75 millimetres. You need to leave grass slightly longer for optimal results (to make a striped finish) in making sure it works as an effective lawn striper. You also should do this to leave your lawn healthier.
Clean and Quiet: The brushless motor is able to deliver a wide range of power as provided by petrol lawnmowers (a petrol lawnmower is often the most powerful type). Unlike a classic petrol mower, however, there's no fuss, noise, or maintenance associated involved. Petrol mower options are able to tackle larger areas, like this mower, and its 46cm rotary cutting diameter.
Summary and Verdict
This petrol lawnmower-like alternative is a great option to go for. It's usually available online or in-stores at around £400, but it's available on Amazon for about £350.
The folding handle mechanism, however, is slightly fidgety. This isn't something that brings the rating of this mower down- it works very well. However, if you're a professional and are looking at grass on hills or very uneven surfaces, this mower may annoy you a little. We found that the folding handles don't secure very well due to their plastic casing, so you may find that they fold if you're at a high incline. This isn't convenient mid-mowing, especially if you're looking for a power for professional use. The striping ability is excellent, so if you won't be dealing with uneven surfaces, go for it!
Last, but certainly not least this list is the legendary Honda HRX476-QY. While it is definitely on the luxury, expensive end of the spectrum- it's definitely worth the money you pay if you decide to spend that much. We're all about helping you save money, make the most cost-efficient purchase you can, while ensuring we explore all ranges of products for you.
The Honda HRX476-QY is quite the investment, so be confident in us when we recommend you to buy it. It's a star!
What We Love:
19" Cutting Deck: With this self-propelled mower, you get above and beyond what you'd get for a cheaper price. You can tackle much larger lawns - even communal gardens - with the 19-inch cutting deck. The other cutting deck sizes are around 15-17 inches, so with this particular heavy-duty mower, you can manage not only a normal, medium-sized garden, but also much larger gardens!
Roto-stop® Technology: This is a safety feature that allows you to disengage the blade without having to cut the engine. This innovative, bespoke blade-brake clutch system is a great feature that efficiently allows you to disengage the rotary blade of the motor without the need to stop the engine. Due to this, you can achieve two helpful goals; easily emptying the 73-litre grass collection box as well as safely and securely transporting the mower across hard surfaces like gravel without any damage being inflicted on the blade. Roto-stop® technology can be activated via a hand control button positioned on the HRX handle.
Polystrong® Deck: The integrated cutter deck of this mower is made of bespoke Honda Polystrong®/ Xenoy®. This is tougher/harder than a whole jurassic rhinoceros... but a lot easier to handle! This feature is unique and expertly designed by Honda for HRX lawn mowers, as one holistic and ultra-smooth unit with the main aim of tremendously enhancing performance. The cutter deck is also physically light, and highly resistant to harmful UV rays- so you don't need to worry about "premature aging", A.K.A. rust. This unique feature also contributes to noise reduction, and easier cleaning as wet grass clippings won't stick to it (in comparison to wet grass cuttings sticking to a steel deck or another metal alloy).
Safe and Well-Performing: One thing with Honda is their reliability and the confidence you can have in their safety mechanisms. They design cars after all, so they're responsible for ensuring the safety of millions of people who ride their cars. The blades of this mower are specially designed not to break- instead, if larger gardens with more debris throw anything in, the blades will twist (if you're unlucky enough to come across any debris as hard as that!)
Free Air-Flow: Like other HRX mowers we've tried, air-flow collection bags and dust-covers are high. Airflow is efficiently generated by the rotating blades, within the cutter deck, where air is drawn in and directed through to the generously-sized grass collection bag (along with all the clippings). The material is ultra-fine and lightweight of these bags, which reflects the quality of the product. There's also a secondary dust-cover that filters and catches the remaining dust particles. It's honestly the most efficient air-flow mechanism we've seen!
Quieter: With a low noise blade of about -0.5dB(A), this mower is very silent compared to traditional blades you'll find with others. Actually, this mower's noise level is 30% under the current EU standard!
7-Year Warranty! This is subject to annual-servicing and provided it's used domestically. The warranty reduces to a decent warranty of 1 year when used in a commercial/professional environment.
Summary and Verdict
This mower is not amongst the traditional electric mowers or even self-propelled petrol mower options. It's a self-propelled rotary mower by Honda, with an extensive warranty and impeccable design. You can't go wrong.
This Honda mower is honestly the best one you could go for- you can't go wrong. It's outstanding in terms of quality, feature-richness, and feature-quality. Not to mention it's versatility for all kinds of grass and surfaces- and ultimately its ability to give gorgeous, luscious stripes. The only downside here is the fat price tag- which we believe is worth every penny, however it's unsuitable for people who are looking for a budget option.
My father, and his father before him, and his father; for the past 3 generations, my family have always been into gardening. The green fingers is a gift passed down to me and I thoroughly enjoy it!
I also have worked in the manufacturing department for Bosch and DeWalt so I like to think I know a thing or two about tools and such!
